Argument

The Cartels of the NLS “Towards London”

ARGUMENT

Recently, the argument and the reading list of the IXth Congres of the NLS that will take place in London on April 2th and 3th 2011 have been disseminated by NLS-Messager 687. They give us the orientation for the preparation of the Congress.

As in the preceding years, the cartels and digital inter-cartels of the NLS will be an important work instrument in the preparation of the Congress on the theme “How Psychoanalysis Works”.

Let’s set off for this year’s cartels with a double challenge: first, that NLS members testify of the workings of the fundamental concepts of psychoanalysis, starting from their own practice; second, that they demonstrate that the way Lacan reformulated those concepts in his last teaching makes them the pragmatic instruments fit to respond to the new symptoms and the new ‘clinic’ we are confronted with in our times.

The unconscious is not the Freudian unconscious anymore. The classic manifestations of the unconscious formations have become rare. The symptom as metaphor of an unconscious truth does not question the subject in the same way anymore. This subject is less interested in the cause and the truth [of the symptom], but rather refers to the object and jouissance. The deciphering of the unconscious is not sufficient anymore as response to the modern ‘clinic’. How can we establish an encounter which introduces the dimension of the unconscious and reinstalls subjective division? What sort of answer can we formulate to the demand for techniques and practical solutions? How can we create an opening for the subject of the unconscious, when the latter appears pinned down by the identificatory labels of the statistical Other? How can we make the subject responsible, when science effaces responsibility? How can we introduce the enigma, when the Other demands transparency?

Does repetition show itself in the same way as in Freud’s time or are we rather increasingly confronted with a pathology of the act, autistic, unplugged from the Other, short-circuited? Those acting-outs, those ‘real’ acts, do they form the current response to the Master of ceremonies? To paradise and happiness as promised by science, repetition responds in the form of a death drive cruder than ever; increased number of suicides, family dramas, unmotivated aggressions, isolation, segregation... How can we reinstall a place of listening and encounter, reintroducing truth in those senseless acts? A passive listening will certainly not suffice anymore. The new ‘clinic’ demands a more active presence by providing hitching points, points to hang on to, and signifiers to make the unconscious exist.

The orientation of Lacan’s last teaching towards the real and the drive gives us pragmatic tools without standards, but allowing for a place of difference, case by case. Which ‘know-how’ (savoir-faire) can such a subject invent with the symptom? Which form of ‘satisfaction’ (satisfaction) can he or she obtain, which does not lead to impasse or disaster? Which operation can make ‘knotting’ (nouage) possible according to the modality of jouissance singular to that subject? Which ‘littoral’ can form the rim of jouissance, which ‘hook’ (agrafe) operates for a subject? Which ‘nomination’ can come closest to scraping the real or lead to an anchoring?

Transference is the workshop of choice for this work. But, here too, modern ‘clinic’ has its consequences. Transference in the analytic ‘clinic’ of our times is not founded anymore, not in the same way, on the a priori supposition of knowledge or on the hypothesis of the unconscious. The establishment of transference will depend on an encounter. As Jacques-Alain Miller was saying (in Mental 5), this encounter will depend on the fact that ‘the object-psychoanalyst is from now on available –available on the market, as they say- and ready to lend him or herself to uses that are distinctly different from what was once conceived as pure psychoanalysis... For that, he should have cultivated his or her docility to the point of knowing how, for any subject, to take the place from where he can act; and what act!’ Knowing how to be this ‘astonishingly versatile, available, multi-functional’ object is articulated to the desire of the analyst as a product of his or her own analysis, as Lacan introduced it in Seminar XI, which will be our common reference, as Anne Lysy proposed.

For this year, therefore, we invite clinical vignettes that demonstrate how these four concepts operate in our contemporary practice with their possibilities, their limits, their surprises and their innovations. Let’s be taught the lessons from these testimonies, and in response to the invitation of our president Anne Lysy, let’s place the emphasis on the construction of the case, let’s make these constructions rigorously testify of our ethics; let’s demonstrate in a clear, coherent way, and according to our analytic logic, that psychoanalysis works.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION

We would like to invite the members of the NLS, the members of the societies and groups of the NLS, as well as the participants in their activities and the participants in the work of the Freudian Field in Eastern Europe, to constitute cartels. The cartels can be declared from now on and till September 30th 2010 to the cartel commission, by filling in and sending a specific declaration form to the following address: cartels@amp-nls.org. The declaration form can be downloaded from the site of the NLS: www.amp-nls.org <http://www.amp-nls.org/> .
Individual persons or incomplete cartels can send a mail to the same address, where all demands will be brought together in order to be able to bring in contact those wanting to form or to complete a cartel.

The cartels of the NLS “Towards London” are clinical cartels. For the inter-cartels they will present a clinical vignette of 3200 signs. They will be asked to send a first product for the end of October.
